Estonia’s higher education system consists of public and private ülikoolid (universities) and rakenduskörgkoolid (professional higher education institutions). All public universities require three years for bachelor’s studies and two additional years for master’s studies.

The country has 18 institutions of higher education, with fve private schools, six state universities, and seven state institutions of professional higher education.

Founded in 1914 by a national art society, this public institution offers degrees in architecture, design, art and culture, fine arts, and animation, with various specialties within these fields.

Founded in 1919, this public academy offers degree programs in various fields of music, focusing on different instruments, voice, conducting, composition, musicology, and music education. There is also a drama school and a humanities department. The school offers undergraduate and graduate degrees, as well as a four-year doctorate in musicology. It has a branch in Tartu and extensive facilities at its main campus in Tallinn.

Founded in 1988, this private school offers degree programs taught in English, Estonian, and Russian. Its programs include international business administration, entrepreneurship, professional communication, and marketing management. The institution operates a high school in Tallinn and opened a business school branch in Helsinki in the fall of 2011.

Founded in 1951 as an agricultural academy, this public institution was given its current title in 2005, after many years of adopting new programs and faculties. It offers degree programs in the areas of agricultural and environmental sciences, veterinary medicine and animal sciences, forestry, rural engineering, technology, economics, and the social sciences.

Founded in 2002, this public university is the third largest in Estonia. The institution consists of 19 institutes and five colleges. Programs in the humanities, social and natural sciences, and teacher training are offered. It has an international research focus, and offers many programs in English.

Founded in 1918, this public university offers degree programs in civil engineering, power engineering, mechanical engineering, IT, chemical and materials technology, economics, and the natural and social sciences. It hosts institutes dedicated to the study of geology, cybernetics, and marine systems.

This public university provides higher education in various fields of engineering, with four-year degrees and training in architectural and environmental engineering, clothing and textile, construction, mechanics, and transportation. The institution, founded in 1992, also has centers dedicated to the humanities, sciences, and sports.

This national research university offers bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degree programs with Estonian as the language of instruction. Programs offered cover disciplines in business and economics, humanities, and medicine. In addition, a number of international programs are taught in English and other foreign languages. The university operates five museums, an observatory and planetarium, and a botanical garden.
